Abstract

Fortynine patients who treated for acute pancreatitis between 1996 and 2000 were evaluated retrospectively. After the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis was confirmed, all patients received medical treatment. According to clinical status some patients underwent surgical treatment. Of the patients 37 (75.5%) were male, the mean age was 55.212.6 years. Forty patients had biliary pancreatitis and the other 9 patients had no obvious cause. Seven patients had severe pancreatitis. Of the patients with biliary pancreatitis, 35 underwent endoscopic papillotomy and 5 surgical treatment. In follow up, pseudocyst developed in 6 patients and all underwent cystoenteric drainage. Diabetes mellitus developed in 1 patient. Three patients (6.1%) died during the hospitalisation period. In conclusion the initial treatment of acute pancreatitis must be medical, in case of biliary pancreatitis, endoscopic papillotomy decreases the rate of surgical management of biliary tract. Surgery may not be avoidable in some cases.
