Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the some biochemical risk factors in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Method: Fifty four patients with RVO were enrolled in this stııdy. As a control group, 60 cases without ocular diseases were also enrolled randomly. In two study groııps, levels of some biochemical risk factors (fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, trigliserit (TG), antithrombin III (AT III)) were studied.

Results: 25 patients had a central RVO, 27 had a branch RVO, and 2 had a hemispheric RVO. Levels of fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, TG, AT III were not signifıcantly different between patients and control subjects (p>0.05). Other risk factors such as systemic hypertension, diabetes mellitus and glaucoma were not to be significantly high in the patient group when compared to the control group(p>0.O5).

Conclusion: This study suggested that changes of level of fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL- cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TG and AT III may not be single risk factor for retinal vein occlusion.
